Cradle Cincinnati Connections

In 2014, several partners came together to create StartStrong, a program aimed at reducing extreme preterm birth (babies born <28 weeks gestation) and infant death in Avondale. At the time, Avondale was experiencing unacceptably high levels of infant mortality. This work paid off.

From 2015-2017, there were 0 extreme preterm births in Avondale. Countywide, we saw a 15% decline in infant deaths.

Because of this success, Cradle Cincinnati Connections is now spreading StartStrong to four different focus areas in Hamilton County. These areas are made up of dozens of distinct neighborhoods, accounting for roughly 40% of all extreme preterm births in Hamilton County.

By offering intensive, place-based services to moms-to-be, we have the opportunity to help more women deliver healthy, full-term infants.
